Konbit:  Collective Action for Healing and Transformation

In Haiti, konbit describes a powerful tradition of collective effort—neighbors, family, and friends joining forces in farming or community projects. Konbit has long been a testament to Haitian resistance and belief in collective action.

At Anseye Pou Ayiti (APA), konbit is more than a cultural practice—it is an integral piece of how we co-create solutions with communities. Since 2018, it has deepened our approach to education reform and community transformation, honoring the ancestral wisdom that change can only happen through collective action.

Konbit in Action

Across Haiti, teachers, parents, students, local leaders, and business owners come together in APA konbits to listen, co-create, and take action. Each gathering is a spark for new forms of collective problem-solving.

1. Strengthening Well-Being and Recovery

In a time when sociopolitical and economic uncertainty has become a daily reality, konbits are where recovery begins. Our partner communities use these gatherings to access vital support, mobilize local solutions, and reclaim hope.

Recent konbits have centered on health, safety, and well-being—creating space for honest conversations on managing trauma and sex education. We’ve also opened discussions on technology and social media, guiding parents and young people to use digital tools in safe and empowering ways. Each gathering reinforces a shared conviction: community care is power, and every child’s dignity and safety are our collective responsibility.

2. Anchoring Educational Transformation

Every konbit becomes a workshop for reimagining pieces of Haiti’s education system. In these trusted spaces, community members define and plan ahead for school improvement and community development efforts. Here, APA’s model of collective leadership comes alive, keeping education relevant and inclusive, even in times of crisis.

 A Movement Catching Fire

In Mirebalais, Gonaïves, and Hinche, konbits are multiplying at a rapid and beautiful pace, bringing together over 100 people at a time. Attendance has tripled in the past year, growing so quickly that we now host three simultaneous gatherings, as no single space can accommodate everyone who wants to participate. APA alumni are now replicating these konbits independently, demonstrating the skills honed through our fellowship programs, expanding the impact and influence of our work, and igniting new circles of leadership wherever they go.

This self-sustaining growth fulfills our original vision: planting the seeds and watching them bloom. It has become a rhythm of solidarity across the nation — proof that when communities lead, change endures.
